Veteran and Military Family Focus Micro-Credential

The veteran and military family focus micro-credential is a specialized program of study that will prepare you to work effectively with veterans and military families. Open to students pursuing a master’s in social work, this program provides a strong foundation for a number of occupations, including, for example, specialized individual and family therapy, counseling, and/or caregiving for veterans and their families; community activism that supports veterans and their families; work with military children as a school social worker; and work as a military social worker.

Course Requirements


Veteran and Military Family Focus Core (3 credits)


Field Placement (6 credits)


  • Required in the advanced year; an additional VMF foundation year placement is optional. Minimum of 6 credits.

Additional Requirements


  • Interprofessional Seminar
    • Four meetings (two each semester) over the course of the advanced year field placement. No credits.
  • Portfolio of VMF-Relevant Assignments
    • Additional graded assignments from three or more courses with veterans or military families as the target population. The majority of assignments are from the advanced year.

Total Credit Hours: 9


3.0 GPA required
