EAS 592LEC - Special Topics MDI Fall 2016: Establishing quantitative relationships between structure and properties of materials is core materials design. A major focus of this course is on the mechanistic origins of scaling laws linking physical and mechanical properties. The objective of this course is to provide an overview of phenomenological and theoretically derived multi-scale relationships between physical, mechanical properties and structure of materials. The course will explore how on can harness these relationships in developing models or guiding experiments for materials design. The course will also introduce students to the impact of crystal structure on materials with multi-functional properties. The key focus of the course is to emphasize the linkage between the length scale(s) of the structure and materials properties. Credits: 3
