This course will examine media and educational leadership and policy from a number of perspectives including: ¿ the role of media in a democracy ¿ the media’s role(s) in policy-making ¿ how the media influences citizens’ knowledge and opinions about education policy issues and how these affect education policy ¿ how the media portrays individuals and groups and how these portrayals affect how others think about and act towards these groups ¿ what education leaders should consider when dealing with the media · ¿ the relationship between government policy-makers and the media ¿ possibilities of new media for democratic policy-making ¿ how the media uses research The course is grounded in a commitment to critical democracy and adopts a broad definition of policy. Students are expected to share responsibility with the instructor for developing questions central to the course, for maintaining open and thoughtful discussion, and for contributing to the development of an engaging community of inquiry.
