ELP 686SEM - Top: With the emphasis on testing, assessment, and improving student outcomes, states are increasingly concerned with aligning standards and practices across P-12 and higher education systems. This course will introduce students to the concept of P-20 education through examining educational transitions. We will examine how students transition into school, from one grade level or institution to another, out of high school into college, and students¿ experiences in college and post-graduate study. The purpose of this course is to encourage students to examine each stage of education in the context of an educational ¿life course¿ ¿ considering both students¿ prior experiences and their future educational transitions. Students will be introduced to the life-course theoretical perspective and we will investigate major stages in the life course such as adolescence and the transition to adulthood as they intersect with education. Students will learn about life history interviewing as a research method and conduct their own life history interviews as part of a research project. The course aims to assist Educational Administration students in using a sociological perspective to consider new ways of administering educational institutions to assist with transitions. The course focuses on linking theory, practice and policy across educational transitions. This course is also appropriate for students in the Higher Education Administration program, and any other students interested in understanding the connections across institutions and grade levels.
