ELP 574SEM - Education in Asia ELP 574 is graduate-level course in Education in Asia. This course enables students to gain in-depth exposure to key educational issues in Asia. Asian students¿ strong performance in international assessments (e.g., PISA and TIMSS) has attracted worldwide attention. However, Asian education faces several challenges such as equity in education and shadow education (i.e., private tutoring industry). ELP 574 provides an overview of educational issues in Asian society in a broad context of societal change and their consequences. The topics and issues to be explored include: education fever in Asia; mechanism of stratification in centralized/standardized education systems; globalization and its impact on education in Asia; stratification in higher education; and multigenerational aspects of social stratification in Asia. This course is valuable for those whose own work in centrally located in issues of Asian education as well as those who wish to become more informed about lessons of Asian education to education in the United States today.
