ELP 589SEM - Education and Socialization ELP 589 explores the socialization tradition in education, focusing specifically on the literature on social class, race/ethnicity and gender as linked to educational institutions and families. We will pay particular attention to the ethnographic research on family and educational institutions as linked to educational processes and outcomes, including academic achievement and attainment, identity formation and work force participation. Although literature is drawn primarily from the United States, some cross-national material will be employed. As part of this course, students will engage in a ¿soft¿ collective research project that leaves lots of room for individual agency/energy/imagination. The course is suitable for Masters and PhD students both within the Graduate School of Education and CAS. Previous qualitative research methods¿ training, although relevant, is not required.
