ELP 520SEM - Counsel for Student Aff Higher education professionals are often the first to recognize and address the variety of personal and interpersonal issues that arise among college students. At the same time, administrators in most campus depts (with the exception of counseling services) are neither equipped nor expected to engage with students in ongoing or long-term counseling relationships. This course is designed to prepare campus professionals with the basic skills and knowledge needed to work effectively with students. The course will introduce students to general helping approaches that are appropriate for the types of interactions, relationships, and contexts they will commonly encounter as professionals. Drawing from counseling texts and techniques, we will focus on theoretical foundations, helping skills, relevant issues in working with college students, and ethical issues related to the helping process. The course will provide opportunities for students to observe and practice individual helping skills. Credits: 3
