ELP 544SEM - Soc of School Knowldg This course is designed to accommodate two types of students ¿ (1) doctoral students (or masters students) interested in examining the social and economic determinants of college access and choice. We examine both the theoretical and the empirical literature related to the many dimensions of access. (2) Masters students seeking to understand the role colleges and universities play facilitating the transition from high school to college and the supports students receive prior to the transition. All students are given the option to complete this course as a service learning opportunity. In order to understand how college access works and what factors improve or impede access, it can be helpful to see how schools, counselors, community based organizations and colleges try to help students and their families along the way.
