ELP 679SEM - Academic Affairs in the Contemporary Research University

This course is designed to introduce you to a series of key issues that confront academics who work in research universities. These issues will focus on the work that faculty are required to do as engaged intellectuals in the American academy in general, and in Schools of Education in particular. We will also consider the nature of doctoral education. Some of the questions that we will reflect on throughout the course include: What are the current trends and major debates in educational research? Where do Schools of Education `fit¿ in the university? What does it mean to be a doctoral student in education? What are the trends in faculty hiring patterns? What types of work are faculty expected to perform and how are they evaluated?
