GGS 540SEM - New Ethnographic Methods

This course is designed to introduce graduate students to a wide range of ¿qualitative research methods¿ (broadly defined) with a focus on the relationship between methodology and feminist knowledge production. The weekly seminar readings will cover topics from ethnography, oral histories, structured/semi-structured interviews, archival research, to content analysis, online participatory observation, among others. We will also discuss new challenges that qualitative researchers are facing with the rise of ¿big data¿ and the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. While we will read a collection of seminal literature on methodology as well as exemplary case studies in class, the best way to master any research method is ¿learning by doing¿ while constantly reflecting on it. So, students who register this course are expected to bring their own research agenda to class (all stages are welcome¿from just a topic, prospectus, to ongoing dissertation), actively share their own methodological reflections with the class, and integrate what they learn into their own research design/writing.
