IMC 560LEC - Medical Students as Co-Agents of Change in Health Systems

This elective experience is designed to empower medical students to be co-agents of change in the health system. By participating in this elective, students will be active members of interprofessional teams in the health care system examining key elements of health systems science in daily practice and contribute to improvements in quality and safety. This innovative elective, provided in collaboration with Great Lakes Health¿s Quality & Patient Safety Institute, immerses students in experiential learning activities where interprofessional teams learn about and engage in continuous quality improvement in our local hospitals. In 2016, Kaleida Health¿s Accreditation Department created the Rover Auditor Program to train staff to contribute towards efforts to provide a better understanding of the clinical and non-clinical quality/safety risks. The program connects participants with their colleagues at the hospital sites developing a shared state of awareness and ownership and ties back to Kaleida Health¿s mission/vision and how every workforce member impacts the patient experience. With the addition of Health System Science as part of the core curriculum for medical students, and a key area that residency programs emphasis in training, the quality auditing experience incorporates learning about the system and structure of healthcare and its processes as well as an understanding of how those processes can be improved.
