JDS 655SEM - Medieval Jewish Thought


This course will examine the influence of Maimonides’ Guide of the Perplexed on later medieval Jewish thought as a debate over the nature of a philosophical religion. This course will examine his followers and critics from the 12th to 17th century, such as Samuel ibn Tibbon, Shem Tov Falaquera, Levi Gersonides, Joseph ibn Kaspi, Hasdai Crescas, Joseph Albo, Isaac Abarbanel, Isaac Arama and Baruch Spinoza. We will consider topic such as the nature of God and prophecy; the meaning of providence, theodicy and evil; the pursuit of wisdom and human perfection; and how to interpret the Bible. Credits: 3
