2024-2025 Graduate Catalog [ARCHIVED CATALOG]

MT 504SEM - Biotechnology Journal Club II

In this required course, students will learn, with collaboration of other MS BTE graduate students and under faculty supervision, how to evaluate and present original research from biotechnology, biochemical, biomolecular, genetic, and related topics. Students will typically present a seminar either describing their proposed thesis/ project research (students in year one of the program) or give a progress report of their ongoing research activities (students in year two of the program). A brief question and answer session will follow each student presentation, involving students and BCLS faculty. Students will learn to formulate a seminar abstract, present in a seminar, prepare quality slides, use background information well, and evaluate papers, methods, results and conclusions. Student presentation will also be evaluated on the student’s critical assessment of the presented research, ability to respond to audience questions and extent to which the student places the results in a broader context of ongoing research.
