MT 503SEM - Biotechnology Journal Club I


In this required course, students will learn to improve their scientific literacy and explore the multidisciplinary biotechnology research fields. Students will expand their knowledge of biotechnology, present journal articles, review research methods, and observe and assess scientific presentations. Students will practice recognizing features of published research, extracting information, and critically examining scientific research in peer-reviewed journals and in original research presentations. In consultation with a faculty member, each student will present a formal 35 to 40-minute presentation on a research topic (students in year one of the program) or a summary of their ongoing MS thesis/ project research (students in year two of the program), followed by a 10 to 15 minute question and answer period. Students will learn to formulate a seminar abstract, present in a seminar, prepare quality slides, use background information and evaluate papers, methods, results and conclusions. Student presentation will also be evaluated on the student¿s critical assessment of the presented research, ability to respond to audience question and extent to which the student places the results in a broader context of on-going research.
