MUS 517SEM - Music, Gender, and Sexuality This course explores music’s relationship to the concepts of gender and sexuality through key texts in music theory, ethnomusicology, and musicology and their larger theoretical contexts in feminist philosophy and queer studies. Topics include ways in which music from a wide range of repertories has represented, reinforced, questioned, challenged, and/or dismantled gender and sexual binaries; how concepts of gender and sexuality intersect with questions of class, politics, and race; and the gendered and sexualized modernist historiography of historical periods of music history in both art and popular music.
