URP 605SEM - Built Environment and Health

The discipline of planning claims to improve the welfare of people and their communities by creating more convenient, equitable, healthful, efficient, and attractive places for present and future generations yet is rarely explicitly addressed in traditional planning practice. A growing body of evidence suggests that social and environmental determinants–shaped by planning–play a key role in public health outcomes, especially in the recent increase in chronic disease in the United States. This graduate seminar is about exploring the possibilities, limits, and challenges of planning and designing communities to promote public health. This course is equivalent to END 605.
