FMD 889 - Global Medicine - B

This elective will provide students with an introduction to global health. Through a short-term, medical relief trip in a low-resource country, students will develop basic competency in global health. This includes developing knowledge, skills and attitudes in the following areas: medical care, cultural humility, cross-cultural communication, teamwork, collaboration, preventive medicine, public health, ethics, patient education and healthcare disparities. The medical relief trips will take place during the winter, spring and summer breaks. Under the supervision of physicians and other healthcare professionals, students will enhance their skills in taking a history, performing a physical exam, making a diagnosis and treating patients in low-resource settings where technology, diagnostic tests and medications are limited. Students will also learn how to plan, implement and evaluate a short-term, medical relief trip.
