FMD 803 - Physical Medicine & Rehab

Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, or physiatrists, are specialists in the nonsurgical treatment of acute and chronic disorders of the musculoskeletal system, brain, and spinal cord. Physiatrists diagnose and treat pain by creating a comprehensive rehabilitation program to restore maximum function lost through injury, illness or disabling conditions. The treatment plan typically involves a medical team that may include physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and other specialists. Students will spend two weeks on an inpatient Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation service and two weeks in an outpatient physiatric practice. Students will become familiar with clinically applicable principles of basic science, anatomy, pathology, and biomechanics, with an emphasis on the clinical and compassionate care of patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
