IDM 559 - Fdtn IPE Fri Night in the ER Friday Night at the ER is an internationally acclaimed simulation game to improve team performance, break down silos, and apply systems thinking. Friday Night at the ER teaches people to collaborate across functional boundaries to achieve system goals. The game is useful for health professions students to introduce concepts of interprofessional collaboration and teamwork, innovation, and data-driven decision making. Although the game uses the hospital setting to teach these concepts, no medical knowledge is necessary. The game challenges teams of four to manage a busy hospital during a simulated 24-hour period that takes just one actual hour to complete. Guided by a trained facilitator, four players per table each manage their department, handle patient flow, and deal with any unexpected situations that arise. Players each have distinct roles, yet depend on each other to communicate, and provide quality care at a reasonable cost. Players discover that quality and cost problems can only be solved when each member puts their essential skills into practice. After the interactive game experience, groups are asked to reflect on their experience and a guided discussion follows.
