This course looks at the way that the characters and narratives of ancient Mesopotamian, Greek and Roman mythology have been explored and reinterpreted in works of Western and Islamic art. Readings will include ancient and classical literature, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, and the writings of Homer and Ovid. These readings will be paired with art historical scholarship on a broad chronology of artistic production, from the ancient world to contemporary art.
