GGS 308LEC - Image and Gender

This course examines how visual culture represents, constructs, and critiques gender roles and stereotypes. Focusing on key examples, including art, popular culture, film, performance art, and new media, this course will consider not only how images reflect gender norms, but also how we as viewers are conditioned to read images in gendered terms. Exploring how femininity and masculinity were conceived during different historical periods and in different places, and how gender ideals have changed in response to social, political, and economic pressures, the course’s lecture/discussion sessions, screenings, readings, and assignments will teach students how to analyze and discuss multiple forms of visual culture. This course is the same as AHI 380.
