CDS 304LEC - Perception of Sound

This course explores the sense of hearing. It will present the fundamentals of auditory perception, including how sound is produced and is transmitted through the peripheral and central auditory system. We will then delve into the process by which individuals translate the physical properties of sound into their unique perceptual experiences, as well as the methods used to assess those experiences. Linguistic and cognitive contributions to auditory perception will be described. This course will also discuss how sound is useful in everyday life as well as how normal auditory perception differs from that of individuals with hearing loss. Students who are Speech and Hearing Science majors should take this course after they have completed the 200-level courses in the department but before they take the 400-level courses in the department.
