AAP 508SEM - Cultural Policy Values and Per

Cultural policies are the ways governments make the arts happen through laws, regulations, financial support, programs, information and a variety of other means. Public policies reflect the intentions, values, and aims of citizens expressed through government initiatives. In this course, students will learn how policy is made and how it works(and sometimes doesn?t work) to ensure that artists can make art, and that the public can participate in the arts in all its forms. Topics include the policy process, rights of artists and citizens, historical and current controversies impacting on the arts, the role of arts organizations, civic engagement, and how individuals can participate in the policy process through advocacy and other means. While the focus is on US cultural policy, students also acquire knowledge about cultural policies globally and internationally. Credits: 3
