BIO 598LEC - Ed. & Practice in Bio Sciences This course is designed as a training course offered to first year PhD students to provide the tools they will need to be successful as teaching assistants in future semesters and to ease them into graduate school. There will be both synchronous and asynchronous assignments that will allow graduate students to learn best practices in the classroom, understand UB specific course policies and procedures, as well as to navigate experiences teaching assistants are likely to face. These topics will be presented asynchronously and organized into three main units of course material, (1) Getting Prepared, (2) In the classroom, and (3) Beyond the Classroom. This course will run alongside BIO200LLB (Evolutionary Biology Lab) each Fall, where graduate students will gain first-hand, in person experience shadowing in a laboratory setting. The students will also attend in person lab preparation sessions and have multiple in person check in/feedback sessions each term. At the end of the course students should feel comfortable with TA assignments, having learned skills to be successful and efficient in the classroom and be able to utilize these skills in their future semesters here at the university.
