AAP 520SEM - Arts Management & Education Policy This course introduces graduate students in arts management to the philosophies and critical issues in arts education and provides exploration of various working models of arts education programs. Arts education can be defined broadly as learning in, about and through the arts, including Pre-K-16, adult theatres, dance and music organizations, non-profit arts organizations, cultural institutions and public arts agencies. Arts education involves knowledge, skills, and understanding of the totality of all arts activities, in the disciplines of the performing and visual arts. In this course, through close examination of several different paradigms, we will investigate the means by which we can provide children and adults with a critical understanding and knowledge of the arts, as well as understand the pathways to arts education partnerships. We will explore the current state of arts education including a review of the latest research, as well as local, state and national policies affecting arts education. In this course, students will acquire an understanding of the workings and dynamics of arts education both in and outside of schools, learn to assess and apply their knowledge effectively and creatively, as well as speak and write from a basis of informed judgement.
