AHI 510SEM - Studies in Medieval Art Hagiography and Narrative: Giotto, St. Francis and Assisi

The seminar will seek to examine the hagiography that has become attached to Giotto from the point of view of historiography, documentation and technical analysis of the work at the basilica of San Francesco at Assisi. The frescoed cycle of the life of Saint Francis at Assisi will also be considered in the framework of the history of the Franciscan order, the content and intent of the various redactions of the life of Saint Francis, and the context of both earlier and later illustrations of the saint’s life. Throughout, we will be concerned with methods and means of narration. Because AHI 510 has been designated the Methods seminar, we will also be concerned with such issues as historiography, biography, connoisseurship, narrative and iconography in the context of the Franciscan material.
