LAW 689LEC - Immigration Law

Immigration is a contentious and complex issue. At its most basic level, it involves the rules and regulations that determine who is permitted to enter this country and the conditions upon which they are allowed to remain. But as our impassioned and conflicted history of immigration shows, developing these basic rules often requires us to address more fundamental questions, such as those involving the meaning of our national identity, the values of our democratic institutions, the boundaries of community and belonging, and the nature of our relationship with the rest of the world. This course explores these and other questions through the lens of the statutes and case law governing the immigration system in the United States. Special attention will be given to the source and scope of the Congressional power to regulate immigration, and the statutory procedure for admission, exclusion, and removal.
