LAW 720LEC - The World Bank Group: Law, Morals, and Development The course explores one of the most iconic institutions of the post war period, the World Bank, an anchor of the Bretton Woods institutions. It examines the legal rationale and the founding philosophy of the World Bank, and critically analyses the relationship of the Bank to development and its twin goals of eliminating extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity. Central to the course are some of the biggest questions involving Bank lending, the Bank’s impact on the environment, the Bank’s Safeguards policy, the rights of indigenous communities, legal reform, human rights, and official corruption. Finally, the course looks at the evolution of the law and development movement and the transformation of international financial institutions in a changed world.
