LAW 747SEM - Gender in American Legal History

Focusing on the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, this seminar will explore the legal history of gender and sexuality in the United States. Likely topics include: the citizenship status of free women in the early Republic; property reform and the first women’s movement; developments in family law; regulation of birth control and abortion; sex crimes; rules governing gendered dress and comportment; intersections of gender, race, and violence, particularly in the context of slavery; the temperance movement; and women’s suffrage.
