Welcome to the practice of law and your career. The goal of this course is to transform from law student to first-year associate or in-house counsel, with an aim to prepare students for the everyday practice of law. This course is a unique hybrid of lecture and experiential simulations which will expose students to key legal and operational concepts in day-to-day practice. Students will learn how to use critical thinking, good judgment and issue spot to apply complex regulations and legal tactics in areas including: ethics, contracts, regulations and compliance, management of outside counsel, settlement negotiation, privacy, and intellectual property issues. Issues discussed and applied in this course are applicable to private practice, government, and in-house attorneys. In order to successfully problem solve and advise the client in simulations, students will use knowledge from prior mandatory coursework, along with learnings in this course. Students will leave this course with sharpened legal skills, effective writing, and productively identifying and advising on risk. Coursework will be derived from various sources, such as articles, regulations, and specific chapters of textbooks. The final exam is a 15-20 page paper.
