LAW 917LEC - The Electronic Lawyer: Discovery, Data Privacy and Cybersecurity in the Digital Age

It is estimated that 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created each day, and that pace is accelerating. The proliferation of data in the Digital Age presents many challenges to the modern lawyer, and has brought about a sea change in case law, best practices, and applied technologies. Faced with ballooning litigation budgets, a host of new privacy laws and enforcement actions in the United States and abroad, and high profile data breaches, clients are looking to the legal profession for solutions. In this course, we will discuss new and emerging legal issues brought on by the Digital Age with a focus on discovery, data privacy and cybersecurity. We will use hypotheticals to simulate real world situations with an emphasis on legal and regulatory frameworks, an attorney?s ethical obligations, and practical advice. The course will also include an overview of how technologies such as advanced analytics and artificial intelligence are changing the practice of law.
