LAW 935LEC - Sex Trafficking in WNY Human Trafficking, or modern day slavery, is an insidious problem affecting every region and every part of the state, including Western New York. In addition to being a crime of sexual violence and exploitation, human trafficking is a market-driven industry in which adults and children are victimized. During this one-credit course, students will learn about the statutory framework in New York State created to address the needs of human trafficking survivors who are also criminal defendants in state court proceedings. This will include a review of the recent HUB Court legislation and the vacatur provision of the Criminal Procedure Law designed expressly for trafficking survivors. Particular attention will be paid to Buffalo’s Human Trafficking Intervention HUB Court, which is the first of its kind in the country. During the course, students will hear from a variety of guest lecturers, including prosecutors, defense lawyers, law enforcement and resource providers, all of whom will provide specialized insight.
