ASL 306LEC - Third-Year American Sign Language 2nd Semester

ASL 306 serves as the second semester of the third year of American Sign Language (ASL) instruction and the last in a sequence of courses in ASL offered here at the University at Buffalo. This course builds on skills learned in ASL 305, further expanding students’ ASL vocabulary, classifiers, grammatical structures, and non-manual markers through dialogues, presentations, and narratives. Covering the topics on the human body, personal hygiene, medicine, sports, and animals, students will have opportunities to increase accuracy and fluency in distinctive features of ASL, such as depicting verbs, ASL adjectives, and ASL adverbs. The students will also learn to retell complex ASL narratives with consistency. The continuation of a detailed analysis of an original narrative in ASL will heighten students’ comprehension and appreciation of ASL literature and provide them with an insight into the experience of ASL people. The local, national, and global perspectives and contributions of the historical and current contexts of the ASL community will be examined to a greater extent.
