This course integrates the foundational sciences with clinical applications into a study of endocrinology, reproduction and genital tract health and disease across the life cycle. The course introduces the embryology, micro- and gross anatomy, physiology, pathology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and microbiology of the endocrine and male and female genital systems in their healthy as well as diseased states. The most common and significant disorders involving the hypothalamus, pituitary, pancreas, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenals, testes and ovary will be addressed. Students will learn about the normal physiology and function of the male and female genital tracts, their role in sexuality, as well as the most common and significant disorders and diseases affecting them. In addition, the process of reproduction, from gamete formation to fertilization, embryogenesis, fetal development and birth will be reviewed. Students will learn the essentials of prenatal care and maintaining health during pregnancy, as well as some of the more common obstetrical complications. Students will learn about these systems in a multifaceted fashion by studying the basic scientific underpinnings, clinical presentations of diseases, diagnoses, treatments, humanistic approaches to care, and the role of the health care system in maintaining health and treating disease. Health maintenance and preventative healthcare will be an essential component. Upon completion of this course, students will understand the basics of endocrinology, select metabolic disorders, obstetrics, gynecology and urology. The course incorporates a variety of instructional methods that include lectures, patient presentations, Case-Based Inquiry Learning, Team Based Learning and other problem-solving sessions to promote the application of key principles.
