IMC 535 - Neuroscience & Behavior

The Brain: Mind, Body and Senses integrates foundational sciences with clinical applications into a study of neuroscience and behavior in health and disease. These topics will be taught by integrating relevant material from the disciplines embryology, histology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology and pathology. The course will cover important disorders from the clinical disciplines of neurology, psychiatry, ophthalmology and otolaryngology from the perspectives of recognition, treatment and prevention. Students will learn to recognize major psychiatric illness and substance use disorders and provide a general outline for treatment and also recognize the significant stigma and disparities that affect individuals with these conditions. Students will begin the process of self-reflection and introspection as it applies to patient health maintenance and self-care. Students will accomplish these goals through a combination of didactic lectures, small group exercises with required preparatory readings, faculty-facilitated case sessions, and Case-Based Inquiry Learning.
