Architecture Overview

The study of architecture offers an indispensable background for students in most fields of study in that it develops skills in critical thinking and making, as well as furnishing tools for interpreting and understanding the ways in which we inhabit and shape the material world. The undergraduate preprofessional Bachelor of Science in Architecture (BS Arch) is formulated around a studio-based curriculum that emphasizes thinking through making. University at Buffalo Architecture boasts one of the largest material shops for an architecture and urban planning school that includes conventional and digital fabrication technologies. Students work directly with materials and tools, producing models that help them connect the formal basis of architecture with its physical construction. In addition, the design studios are supported by lectures and seminars in history, theory and building technologies of architecture. These courses help students understand that architecture is a multi-disciplinary profession that combines knowledge from the humanities, the applied arts and engineering technology. The pre-professional Bachelor of Science in Architecture (BS Arch) is the foundation for our accredited professional Master of Architecture.

The Architecture Minor, a non-studio based track, provides students with a liberal exposure to the humanities, technology, social sciences, and aesthetic expression through the lenses of the built and natural environments. The Architecture Minor may enhance and provide additional knowledge for students interested in pursuing an NAAB-accredited professional 3+ year Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) graduate degree or a Master of Science in Architecture - Historic Preservation track degree upon completion of their baccalaureate studies. The Architecture Minor is typically completed within six semesters.
