Counseling, School and Educational Psychology Overview
The mission of the Department of Counseling, School and Educational Psychology (CSEP) is to prepare students to work with individuals, groups and agencies to resolve problems and enhance personal development. Counseling theory and skills are an essential component of careers in counseling, psychology, education, social work, and related health professions.
The Counseling Minor in the Graduate School of Education focuses on educating students about professions in counseling and psychology, such as school counseling, school psychology, counseling psychology, mental health counseling, rehabilitation counseling, and educational psychology. The Minor offers a unique focus on careers in counseling and psychology and basic counseling processes and helping relationships. The coursework with its emphasis on counseling theory and introductory helping skills in the field of counseling is applicable to undergraduates considering careers in counseling fields and also other fields that emphasize interpersonal and communication skills. Specifically, the Counseling Minor allows students to study in depth current issues in specific areas of counseling and psychology, such as school counseling, mental health counseling, counseling psychology, school psychology, and rehabilitation counseling through upper level courses focused on those topics. The Counseling Minor is designed to be a pre-professional sequence of courses that will prepare students for entry-level positions in social service or helping jobs, or prepare them for graduate studies in counseling, psychology, social work, or other helping professions. The minor does not directly lead to a certification or licensure as a counselor. Graduate degrees are required for licensure or certification in New York State.
