Counseling, School and Educational Psychology Overview

Our departmental mission proudly states: We are an interdisciplinary and collaborative department operating within a community-based, scientist-practitioner methodology. In this model, we produce cutting-edge research that informs students, scholars, and practitioners to build upon the strengths of diverse populations. As scientist-practitioners, we educate students in mental health, rehabilitation, and school counseling as well as counseling psychology, school psychology and educational data science for evidenced-based policy and practice. Through an equity, diversity, justice, and inclusion (EDJI) infused framework, our teaching, research, and service has an impact at local, state, national, and international levels.

The Counseling Minor in the Graduate School of Education focuses on educating students about professions in counseling and psychology. The Minor offers a unique focus on careers in counseling and psychology, counseling processes, and helping relationships. The coursework with its emphasis on counseling theory and introductory helping skills is applicable to undergraduate students considering careers in counseling fields and other fields emphasizing interpersonal and communication skills. Specifically, the Counseling Minor allows students to study current issues in specific areas of counseling and psychology, such as school counseling, mental health counseling, counseling psychology, school psychology, and rehabilitation counseling through upper-level courses focused on those topics. The Counseling Minor is designed to be a pre-professional sequence of courses that will prepare students for entry-level positions in social service or helping jobs, or prepare them for graduate studies in counseling, psychology, social work, or other helping professions. The minor does not directly lead to a certification or licensure as a counselor. Graduate degrees are required for licensure or certification in New York State.

Academic Advising

Initial discussions of adding the Counseling Minor to a student’s academic plan should begin with the student’s Major Academic Advisor. Clarification of any courses required for the Counseling Minor may be directed to the Department of Counseling, School, and Educational Psychology.
