Nonprofit Leadership Minor

Admission Criteria


Current UB students seeking admission to the Nonprofit Leadership minor should complete the College of Arts and Sciences Major/Minor Change Request Form.

*Students may substitute one relevant 300- or 400-level not included on this list, with the approval of program staff.

No more than two 300- or 400-level courses may be used to satisfy credit requirements in the student’s major, other minors, or programs. Students in the Health and Human Services major may only use SSC 103  and one 300- of 400- level course to satisfy both the major and the minor;  no other course duplication is allowed:

Academic Requirements


  • Minimum GPA of 2.000 overall in the minor.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.000 in the minor’s two required courses: SSC 103  and SSC 235 .

Transfer Credit Policy

  • At least 50 percent of the coursework toward the minor must be completed at UB.

Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of the minor in Nonprofit Leadership, students will be able to:

  • Define what nonprofit organizations are, identify some of their distinct features, and explain how they are different from for-profit and government agencies.
  • Articulate how nonprofit organizations fit within the broader economic and social ecosystem in the U.S.
  • Identify some of the pressures and challenges confronting nonprofit organizations, as well as the unique opportunities that nonprofits have to deliver social or civic impact.
  • Understand the basic functions, roles, and skill sets common to nonprofit organizations, including governance, fundraising, program evaluation, financial management, advocacy, and community engagement.  
  • Understand the importance of cultural competency and diversity in the populations served and in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate an ability to think and write critically about social issues and the role of nonprofit organizations in addressing them.
