Biomedical Engineering PhD

Our flexible Biomedical Engineering PhD program allows students to pursue research in molecular, cellular and tissue engineering, biomedical devices, sensors, instrumentation and diagnostics, computational engineering and modeling, medical imaging and analysis, or in a student’s chosen area of interest. Faculty in the Biomedical Engineering department, part of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, help students gain the knowledge and research skills to contribute to a company or university in a research setting.

Required Core (12 credits)


Select 4 Biomedical Engineering (BE) graduate level courses, with advisor approval, including:

Electives (30-48 credits)


Number of elective credits may vary depending on choice made to complete the culminating experience. Be sure to complete enough elective credit to reach 72 minimum total credit hours. 

  • Select from any graduate level Biomedical Engineering (BE) courses and other School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) courses with approval from your academic advisor and Director of Graduate Studies (DGS).
  • A minimum of 12 credits must be from the Biomedical Engineering (BE) department. More credits from BE are required based on the culminating experience chosen.
  • A maximum of 6 credits of BE 596  and/or BE 598   will be allowed. 

Dissertation (12-30 credits)
