Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) EdM

Programs in childhood education deal with children from grades one through six. The program in childhood education is also available with a bilingual extension/specialization. The Initial/Professional Program in Childhood Education is designed specifically for graduate students without an undergraduate degree in education who wish to teach at the childhood level. The Professional Program in Childhood Education is designed for graduate students who completed an approved undergraduate major and hold a New York State Initial Certification in childhood education.

I. Initial/Professional Curriculum

II. Professional Curriculum (General Elementary Emphasis)


Major Area Requirement (3 credits)

Select 12 credits from:

  • Any courses not used to complete the Emphasis Area above.

Culminating Experience: Exam, Project or Thesis (0-3 credits)


Additional Requirements


Required for Conferral of Degree:

  • Proof of completion of Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) workshop
  • Proof of completion of NYSED Students with Disabilities Requirement
  • Proof of valid NYS Initial Teacher Certificate

Total Professional Credits: 33-36

II. Professional Curriculum (Literacy Emphasis)


Childhood Elective (3 credits)

  • A course not used from the Literacy Elective area.
