Admission Criteria


Current UB students seeking admission to the Applied Ontology Minor will be added to the minor upon request by completing the College of Arts and Sciences Major/Minor Change Request Form.

Minor Requirements


Total Credits Required for Minor: 18


Total Credit Hours Required represents the minimum credits needed to complete this program, and may vary based on a number of circumstances. This chart should not be used for financial aid purposes.

Academic Requirements


  • Passing grade (C- or above) in required courses. 

Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of the minor:

  • Students will gain the technical and philosophical education necessary for careers in data management, information architecture, and AI development.
  • Students will acquire the skills to create, evaluate, and maintain ontologies using established standards, such as the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO).
  • Students will learn to effectively collaborate with subject-matter experts to create solutions for organizing data in a variety of research domains.
