Computational Linguistics MS

The Computational Linguistics MS is a highly specialized interdisciplinary program that integrates coursework in computer science, statistics, language studies, cognitive science, psycholinguistics, and artificial intelligence. Offered jointly by the Departments of Linguistics and Computer Science and Engineering, this program equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue careers in the rapidly evolving human language technologies industry.

Electives & Culminating Experience (6 credits)


Electives (3-6 credits)


Number of elective credits may vary depending on choice made to complete the culminating experience. Be sure to complete enough elective credit to reach 30 minimum total credit hours. 

Electives to be chosen in agreement with your advisor. Other classes may be taken with the approval of the Computational Linguistics Director.

Culminating Experience: Project (0-3 credits)

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)


1) Comprehend advanced concepts of linguistics, as well as literature that assumes such concepts.

2) Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.

3) Achieve awareness of linguistic diversity and variability.

4) Master the ability to construct arguments for choosing between alternative analyses of linguistic phenomena and to identify relevant data bearing on the analyses.

5) Analyze a complex computing problem and apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions, while understanding and minimizing any ethical and demographic bias in the natural language processing model.

6) Design, implement and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline.
