Geological Sciences MS


The Department of Earth Sciences focuses on advancing our understanding of earth and applying that knowledge to problems of societal importance. Our faculty members apply interdisciplinary approaches to three main themes: (1) climate change, (2) geohazards, volcanology and geodynamics, and (3) water and environment. Both thesis and project tracks are offered. Graduate studies are aimed at preparing students for professional careers in in industry or government (both tracks) or to continue to a doctoral program (thesis track). Students receive specialized training in their selected focus area and also are exposed to the full breadth of the Department’s expertise to provide balance and career flexibility.

Thesis Track

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)


1) Masters students will demonstrate mastery of the basic foundations of geological research through critical evaluation of the scientific literature and formulation of relevant questions and hypotheses.
2) Master of science students will demonstrate the ability to synthesize published knowledge and to critically evaluate it in written form.    
3) Masters students will demonstrate the ability to collect and interpret geoscientific evidence in the form of field observation, analytical methods, experiments and/or modeling.    
4) Master students will demonstrate the ability to quantitatively assess geocientific data and to correctly make quantitative estimates of processes.    
5) Masters student will demonstrate the ability to conduct independent research and to communicate the research and its results both oral and written form the later of which is of a quality that can be used by independent workers.
