Higher Education and Student Affairs EdM

The Master’s program in Higher Education Administration with a concentration in student affairs administration is for you, if you wish to pursue a career in college student affairs administration. Our program focuses on providing you with the skills needed to help two- and four-year institutions meet the learning and development needs of all students, and to personalize the college campus. Our program is designed to meet the guidelines developed by the Council for Advancement of Standards in Higher Education, for master’s programs. The guidelines emphasize student development, multicultural issues and practical experience.

Electives (6 credits)


  • Students will complete 6 credits of elective courses. We encourage students to select courses, in consultation with your advisor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy, that will advance your learning and align with your professional goals. One elective may be fulfilled by a supervised internship experience.

Culminating Experience: Exam and Capstone (3 credits)

2) Demonstrate an awareness and deeper understanding of cultural diversity issues.

3) Critically analyze research on students and the higher education system

4) Develop evaluative tools for assessing the effectiveness of programs and interventions

5) Understand the history of American higher education and assess its relevance for contemporary colleges

6) Utilize organizational theory to examine and assess the structure and function of colleges and universities as complex organizations

7) Develop skills to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms

8) Develop, knowledge, awareness and competence to work in a culturally diverse, pluralistic society

9) Understand the factors influencing the rising costs of college and critically examine potential solutions to reduce cost

10) Apply theory to practice in relation to serving the needs of students and of organizations
