Historic Preservation Advanced Certificate

The Advanced Graduate Certificate in Historic Preservation, welcomes students with educational and professional backgrounds in fields as diverse as architecture, planning, law, archaeology, history, journalism, art history, and urban studies. The certificate in historic preservation may also be pursued concurrently with the Master of Urban Planning, the Master of Architecture or other graduate programs at the University at Buffalo. Students explore history and theory, methods, preservation planning, and design, while taking advantage of the incredible historic resources in the Buffalo-Niagara region.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)


1) Understand how to apply the history and theory of American Historic Preservation to contemporary historic preservation practice.

2) Understand how to apply knowledge about preservation law, legislation and governing bodies to contemporary historic preservation practice.

3) Understand how to apply criteria established by the National Park Service in naming, evaluating, and designating properties and districts.

4) Understand how to apply the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for documenting and rehabilitating historic properties. When evaluating and restoring historic materials properties, the student can (1) properly select and use historic materials, and (2) effectively employ means and methods for evaluation and restoration.

5) Develop a general understanding of preservation economics and apply economic principles to contemporary historic preservation practice.

6) Apply primary research abilities-including analytical, writing and verbal skills-to historic preservation projects.

7) Manage a practical preservation planning project from initial conceptualization, precedent analysis, information gathering, and analysis through interim and final reporting, presentation, and documentation.
