International Development and Global Health MS

The 36-credit program, jointly offered by UB’s School of Public Health and Health Professions and the School of Architecture and Planning, combines courses in epidemiology, global health, program planning and evaluation, international development, urban planning and environmental design. Its close association with UB’s Community of Excellence in Global Health Equity provides opportunities for hands-on field placements around the world where you can work on water and sanitation, food and nutrition, health in resource-poor settings and other important topics that affect populations across the globe.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)


1) Describe the major causes of morbidity and mortality around the world, and how the risk of disease varies with regions.

2) Describe the major strategies used to reduce disparities in global health.

3) Evaluate the health status of populations using available data.

4) Compare different national health systems, including their contexts and strengths/limitations.

5) List major social, economic, and environmental determinants of health.

6) Describe how cultural context influences perceptions of health and disease, as well as health outcomes.

7) Describe how global trends (economics, climate, etc.) impact human health across the globe.

8) Describe the relationship between health and access to and quality of water, sanitation, food, and air.

9) Compare international development goals, policies, and processes across the globe.

10) Define the core concepts of financing and managing international development projects.

11) Compare strategies for creative, cross-sector problem solving and innovation.

12) Compare models of leadership and community engagement.

13) Work with international partners to build capacity and co-create strategies for improving health and development outcomes.

14) Apply skills in analyzing secondary quantitative and qualitative data.

15) Apply skills in writing reports.

16) Apply skills in delivering verbal presentations to stakeholders.

17) Apply skills in designing and evaluating interventions.

18) List the ethical considerations of global health and international development projects.
