Mathematics PhD


The Department of Mathematics offers rigorous graduate programs that combine study and research opportunities under the direction of an internationally-known faculty. Students participate in mathematical research in the primary areas of analysis, algebra, applied mathematics and geometry/topology. Area seminars inform faculty and students on current advancements in mathematics. Mathematical training is balanced with faculty mentoring. The goal is to give students the best possible preparation for the many career opportunities available in academia, industry and government.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)


1) Graduating students will have demonstrated a deep understanding of higher concepts in two or more of the following core areas of mathematics; analysis; algebra; geometry/topology; applied mathematics; and numerical analysis. 

2) Graduating students will have demonstrated a master of higher concepts in two or more of the following core areas of mathematics: analysis; algebra; geometry/topology; applied mathematics; and numerical analysis. 

3) Graduates will be able to summarize major themes and current research problems in their area of specialization. 

4) Graduates will be able to write original research papers in their area of research. 

5) Graduates will have carried out and presented an original work of research in their discipline.
