Mechanical Engineering MS

The Mechanical Engineering MS program prepares students for doctoral study or industrial positions specializing in research, project management and product innovation in mechanical engineering. The program provides a sound foundation in technical fundamentals with a broad-based curriculum in design and optimization; dynamics, control and mechatronics; fluid and thermal sciences; and bioengineering, computational and applied mechanics and materials. 

Thesis Option


Required Core (24-27 credits)


Select 8 to 9 courses from:

  • All graduate level courses in Mechanical Engineering (MAE).
  • All graduate level courses in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). 
  • Graduate level courses from Biology (BIO), Chemistry (CHE), Physics (PHY) or Mathematics (MTH).
  • Limit of of 9 credits from outside of MAE.
  • 2 semesters of MAE 503 are required:

Culminating Experience: Thesis (3-6 credits)


Total Credit Hours: 30


3.0 Degree GPA required

Project Option


Required Core (27 credits)


Select 9 courses from:

  • All graduate level courses in Mechanical Engineering (MAE).
  • All graduate level courses in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). 
  • Graduate level courses from Biology (BIO), Chemistry (CHE), Physics (PHY) or Mathematics (MTH).
  • Limit of of 9 credits from outside of MAE.
  • 2 semesters of MAE 503 are required:

  • Limit of of 9 credits from outside of MAE.
  • 2 semesters of MAE 503 are required:
