The Social Work/Social Welfare MSW/PhD program prepares ambitious social justice advocates for a career in conducting research of consequence. The dual-degree program reduces the total time and credits compared to completing each degree separately. The MSW/PhD program offers both traditional and advanced standing tracks and incorporates our signature trauma-informed and human rights perspectives.

Traditional MSW/PhD Program - Curriculum
- For students with a bachelor’s degree in any undergraduate major
- 900 total field placement hours (420 hour foundation placement + 480 hour advanced placement)
- Full-time (5+ years) and on-campus only

Special Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in social work is required for the advanced standing version of the MSW/PhD dual degree. Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
1) Demonstrate knowledge and skills to practice as professional social workers with and on behalf of individuals, families, groups, and communities, and in systems of care and institutions, using a trauma-informed and human rights perspective. 2) Apply empirically and theoretically-based practice knowledge grounded in the ethics and values of the profession to practice with diverse and oppressed populations.
